We made our first small batch of homemade deodorant today!
We got our ingredients together.
- 1/2 cup arrowroot powder
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 10 Tbsp coconut oil (we use organic extra virgin coconut oil because it smells the best)
- 4 heaping Tbsp beeswax (we used yellow, but it is also available in white)
- 25 drops tea tree essential oil
- 25 drops lavender essential oil
We had 3 old store-bought deodorant 2 ounce containters. (We ended up with a very small amount of liquid left that didn’t fit into our containers.)
Add all the ingredients to a stainless steal pot and place on stove on low heat. Stir continually, scraping down sides, until everything is melted. The beeswax takes a little longer than the coconut oil (see photo). Stir until mixture is smooth and the dry ingredients are fully incorporated.
Take your clean deodorant containers (being sure the bottom is completely twisted down to allow for full container of your homemade deodorant). Pour the melted mixture into the deodorant container until completely full. Let your new deodorant sit on the table or counter until completely cooled.
We’re starting out using our homemade deodorant in cooler weather since I’ve read that your body will actually adapt to using deodorant in place of antiperspirant/deodorant after a while and you won’t perspire as much. Plus, since coconut oil becomes liquid at 76 degrees, I didn’t want to start using this in the middle of the summer and have my deodorant melt all over the place. We might have to place this in the refrigerator come warmer weather. I’ll let you know. I’ll also update with new deodorant recipes as I try them.
Update: The temperature of our house gets down into the 50s at night, so this morning when we checked our new deodorants they were rock solid! I couldn’t even twist them up! I set them on the fireplace mantle to warm them up a little, and sure enough, they are able to twist now! So remember to not let this homemade deodorant get too cold or you won’t be able to get it out of the container! 🙂
Next test……how does it work?? I’ll update again in the morning.
Does it work???? YES!! I did feel a little “humidity” under my arms a few times throughout the day (which is completely normal with deodorant), but I did not have any odor whatsoever! Didn’t even have to freshen up the deodorant during the day. Now we have to make Daddy and the little man some manly-smelling deodorant so they doesn’t smell like lavender. 🙂
